500 Days Of Film Reviews 2017's Oscar Nominations
The nominations for this year's Oscars were announced today ahead of the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony on 26th February.
There were few surprises among the list of nominees. La La Land scooped 14 nominations - including two for best original song (sadly no nomination for Sing Street's wonderful Drive It Like You Stole It). Moonlight received eight nominations while Manchester By The Sea and Hacksaw Ridge got six Oscar nominations each.
I was pleased to see Michael Shannon's name included in the list of Best Supporting Actors for his superb performance in Nocturnal Animals. He was left out in favour of co-star, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, at the Golden Globes and in the BAFTA 2017 nominations.
However, I was surprised that Amy Adams was left off the Best Actress list. I would have included her for her performance in either Arrival or Nocturnal Animals.
While some categories feel easy to predict, others are far closer. Best Animated Picture is, once again, a competitive field with Kubo And The Two Strings, Moana,
My Life As A Courgette, The Red Turtle and Zootropolis all vying for the top prize.
Meanwhile, I wouldn't like to choose the winner of the Best Visual Effects award with Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, The Jungle Book, Kubo And The Two Strings and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in the running.
Overall, La La Land will likely bag the most awards come 26th February. The only film that could rain on its parade is Barry Jenkins' equally deserving Moonlight. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens on the night.
