500 Days Of Film Reviews The 89th Academy Awards
Well that was awkward.
Sadly, the 89th Academy Awards will be best remembered for that terrible moment when La La Land was announced as the winner of the Best Picture Oscar instead of Moonlight.
How awful for the cast and crew of both films. However, we should also remember how gracious both movie teams were when the mistake was finally revealed (and during the countless interviews afterwards).
Accounting firm in charge of vote counting, PricewaterhouseCoopers, issued a speedy apology (of sorts... see below). There will, of course, be an investigation. Lessons will be learned. Systems will rebooted... people will be fired (and probably fired again for good measure). The Academy will look back to those good ole days when the winners were announced three months before the ceremony.
However, let's not let this controversy overshadow Moonlight's superb achievement (the film also won Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali's wonderful performance and Best Adapted Screenplay).
Let's forget the mistake. Moonlight is a special and important film - and it deserves its proper place in Oscar history.
Of course, La La Land did not leave the Academy Awards empty handed. Far from it. Damien Chazelle's movie received a total of six Oscars, including Best Director (for Damien Chazelle), Best Actress (Emma Stone), Best Cinematography (for Linus Sandgren) and Best Original Score (Justin Hurwitz).
As expected, Viola Davis won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her poignant and impressive performance in Fences. Meanwhile, Casey Affleck won the Best Actor Oscar for his moving performance in Manchester By The Sea. Kenneth Lonergan's film also won Best Original Screenplay.
Best Animation went to Zootropolis with Best Documentary awarded to OJ: Made In America. Best Film In A Foreign Language went to Iran's The Salesman. Director, Asghar Farhadi boycotted the Oscars (his second Academy Award in five years after the wonderful A Separation won in 2012) in protest at President Trump's travel ban.
However, Farhadi sent two Iranian-Americans to pick up the Oscar and read his acceptance message. They were Firouz Naderi, a former Nasa scientist who was the project manager for the Mars exploration and Anousheh Ansari, the first self-funded woman in the world to have gone into space.
